Prof. Eleonora Lozano confirmed participation in Lawle-EPRG 2017


We are pleased to announce that Universidad de Los Andes’ prof. Eleonora Lozano Rodriguez has confirmed participation in the joint Lawle-EPRG 2017 event.

Prof. Eleonora Lozano is Director of the Masters Program in Taxation as well as the Specialization Program in Taxation at UniAndes. A permanent member of the organizing committee of LAWLE, prof. Lozano is an expert in arbitration, member of the Centro de Arbitraje y Conciliación Cámara de Comercio de Bogotá and of the Centro de Arbitraje y Conciliación (MARCO) del Autorregulador del Mercado de Valores.


Prof. Keiichi Yamazaki confirmed participation in Lawle-EPRG 2017

We are pleased to inform that Yokohama National Universitys Professor Keiichi Yamazaki, has confirmed participation in the joint Lawle-EPRG 2017 event.

Prof. Keiichi Yamazaki is Head, Department of International Development, GSISS, YNU, Head, Department of International Economics, College of Economics, YNU, Chief, Macroeconomic Growth Division, Center for Economic Growth Strategy, YNU, Researcher, Unit for Development Policy for Latin America, Institute of Advanced Sciences, YNU and Vice Director, Joint Japan-World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program at YNU on Public Policy and Taxation. 

Prof. Yamazaki is a current Board Member of the  Japan Society of Social Science on Latin America and of the Japan Association for the Study of Local Government. He is currently on the Organizing Committee of the 2017 Annual Meeting of Japan Association for the Study of Local Government (to be held in November at Senshu University, Tokyo) and of The 74th Annual Meeting of Japan Institute of Public Finance (to be held in September 2017 at Rikkyo University, Tokyo)

The Economics and Politics Research Group (EPRG) is accepting submissions of papers and book launch proposals for the joint events Fourth Latin American Workshop in Law and Economics, LAWLE 2017 and Fifth Annual Meeting of the Economics and Politics Research Group, 2017 EPRG to be held on November 16 to 18, 2017 in Brasilia, Brazil. We are looking for papers and books that cut across the fields of economics, political science, law, sociology and psychology.

Submissions of papers and book-launch proposals should be made by September 15, 2017 through the submission webpage:

Prof. Pery Francisco Assis Shikida confirmed participation in LAWLE 2017


We are pleased to announce that prof. Pery Francisco Assis Shikida, Western Parana State University (Unioeste) has confirmed he will participate in LAWLE 2017.

Prof. Pery Shikida is presently Dean of International Relations at Unioeste. Economist at UFMG (1989), Master in Agricultural Economics at ESALQ/USP (1992), prof. Shikida has a PhD in Economics Applied from ESALQ/USP (1997). Post-doc in Economics at FGV/SP (2009). Visiting Scholar at Kaiserslautern Universität/Germany (2000 and 2005) and University of Wisconsin/USA (2010). Visiting Professor at Università Politecnica delle Marche/Italy (2013), University of Évora/Portugal (2015), Universidad de la Rioja/Spain (2016) and Universitatea Babes Bolyai/Romania (2016). Associate Professor at Western Parana State University (Unioeste).

We are pleased to announce that prof. Leon Victor de Queiroz Barbosa, Federal University of Campina Grande
has confirmed he will participate in LAWLE 2017.

Leon Victor de Queiroz Barbosa is Professor of Political Science at Federal University of Campina Grande, where coordinates the area of Political Science in the department of Social Sciences. He is also deputy coordinator of the Master Program in Political Science at the same institution. As a researcher, he’s member of the Center of Legislative Studies (Federal University of Minas Gerais) and of the PRAETOR – Study Group of Judiciary, Politics and Society (Federal University of Pernambuco).

He is also the Editor of Studies of Politics Review and member of the Eletronic Review of Political Science’s editoral board. His current research focus on judicial empowerment in Latin America using Qualitative Comparative Analysis approach, financed by CNPq (National Research Council)
In 2016 Professor Barbosa was awarded a “honorable mention” in the CAPES Thesis Award for his Ph.D. Thesis, “The Silence of the Incumbents: partisan fragmentation and judicial empowerment in Brazil”. He acts on the following fields: judicial institutions, political institutions, comparative politics and quantitative methods.

Prof. Alberto Simpser Mondlak confirmed participation in LAWLE 2017

We are pleased to announce that prof. Alberto Simpser Mondlak, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, ITAM-Political Science Department
has confirmed he will participate in LAWLE 2017.

From Prof. Alberto Simpser’s webpage:

Professor Simpser’s research examines major problems in the political economy of development, including corruption, electoral manipulation, and failures of governance and democratic accountability. His work utilizes statistical, experimental, formal, and qualitative methods. Prof. Simpser joined the faculty of ITAM (Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México) as Associate Professor in the fall of 2014. Previously, he worked as Assistant Professor of political science at the University of Chicago. He has been a residential Fellow at the Princeton Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance, and a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He is a Level II National Researcher in Mexico’s Sistema Nacional de Investigadores. Prof. Simpser holds a PhD degree in political science and an MA degree in economics from Stanford University, and a B.Sc. degree in engineering sciences from Harvard College.

Prof. Rodrigo R. Soares confirmed participation in LAWLE 2017


We are pleased to announce that prof. Rodrigo Soares, Lemann Professor of Brazilian Public Policy and International and Public Affairs, Columbia University, has just confirmed he will participate in LAWLE 2017.

From Columbia University School of Public Affairs:

Rodrigo R. Soares is Lemann Professor of Brazilian Public Policy and International and Public Affairs. Professor Soares’ research centers on development economics, ranging from labor, human capital, and demographic economics, to crime. His work has appeared in various scientific journals, including American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, and Journal of Development Economics, among various others. Before joining Columbia, Soares taught at the Sao Paulo School of Economics-FGV, PUC-Rio, the University of Maryland, and the Harvard School of Public Health.

In 2006, he was awarded the Kenneth J. Arrow Award from the International Health Economics Association for the best paper published in the field of Health Economics. Soares is research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA, Germany), research affiliate at J-PAL Latin America, and associate editor of the Journal of Human Capital, of the Journal of Demographic Economics, and of the IZA Journal of Labor & Development. He has acted as consultant for the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and state governments in Brazil on issues related to crime and violence, health, and development.  He received his Ph.D. in Economics under the guidance of Gary S. Becker at the University of Chicago in 2002.

Prof. Thomas Ulen confirmed participation in Lawle 2017

We are pleased to announce that prof. Thomas S. Ulen, Swanlund Chair Emeritus Professor, College of Law, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has just confirmed he will participate in LAWLE 2017. Prof. Ulen will deliver the event’s keynote speech.

From the College of Law, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign:

Professor Ulen received a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, a master’s from St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, and a PhD in economics from Stanford University. He holds a Swanlund Chair, one of the highest endowed titles on the Urbana-Champaign campus, and is director of the College’s Program in Law and Economics. In addition, he is a research affiliate of the Environmental Council, a member of the Campus Honors faculty, and holds positions in the Department of Economics and the Institute for Government and Public Affairs.

Recently, Professor Ulen served as a visiting professor at the University of Bielefeld, and as the foreign chair in international and comparative law at the University of Ghent, Belgium. He has previously been a visiting professor in Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, and a Ford Foundation Professor in Shanghai, China.

As a scholar, Professor Ulen examines a variety of issues related to economics, legal scholarship, and legal education. He has recently completed work on two new books, Cognition, Rationality, and the Law (with Russell Korobkin; University of Chicago Press) and Foundations of Environmental Policy (with John B. Braden, Edward Elgar Publishers, Ltd.). His book, Law and Economics (with Robert Cooter), now in its fourth edition, has been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, French, and Russian.

A prolific writer and researcher, Professor Ulen has contributed four entries—on regulation generally, quantity regulation, price regulation, and quality regulation—for the Oxford Economic History of the United States and a chapter entitled, “The Limits of Law for Imperfectly Rational Actors” for Law and Irrational Behavior (Francesco Parisi, ed., University of Chicago Press, 2003). In addition, he is editing a book of legal humor, and expanding his Illinois Law Review article, “A Nobel Prize in Legal Science,” into a book.

Professor Ulen was a member of the founding board of directors of the American Law and Economics Association and has served as a member of the editorial board of several professional journals. He is also a co-organizer, with Professor Tom Ginsburg and Professor Richard McAdams, of the Midwest Law and Economics Association Annual Meeting at the College of Law.

Prof. Emerson H. Tiller confirmed participation in LAWLE 2017

We are pleased to announce that prof. Emerson Tiller, PRITZKER School of Law, Northwestern University, has just confirmed he will participate in LAWLE 2017.

From PRITZKER School of Law, Northwestern University:

Emerson H. Tiller joined the Northwestern faculty in 2003 as a Professor of Law with a courtesy appointment at the Kellogg School of Management as Professor of Business Law. Prior to joining the Northwestern faculty, Professor Tiller was a professor at the University of Texas, Graduate School of Business, where he also directed of the Center for Business, Technology and Law. His research has primarily focused on empirical and theoretical analyses of political forces in regulatory and judicial decision-making.

Professor Tiller has also examined the legal and strategic management of intellectual property. He has published numerous papers in law and economic journals as well as law reviews, and has won research grants and fellowships for his work (including awards from the National Academies of Science, the John M. Olin Program in Law and Economics, and the Bradley Foundation).
